Tunisia is the smallest nation in the Maghreb region of North Africa, at almost 165,000 square kilometres (64,000 sq mi) in area, and the northernmost country in all of Africa.

Geographically, Tunisia contains the easternmost part of the Atlas Mountains and the northernmost region of the Sahara desert. The country’s remaining terrain is fertile soil. Its extensive 1,300-kilometre (810-mile) coastline includes the African conjunction of the western and eastern parts of the Mediterranean Basin in Africa. It features the second and third closest points of the African mainland to Europe, after Gibraltar, via the Sicilian Strait and Sardinian Channel.

Tunisia belongs to a number of international associations, including the African Union, the Arab Maghreb Union, La Francophonie, and the Arab League. Furthermore, Tunisia and the European Union have an association agreement, which has helped in economic cooperation, privatisation, and industrial modernisation. This strengthened the bonds between Tunisia and Europe and established strong alliances, specifically with France.
